RECENT DATA ON KENYA
Children in Kenya
50% of Kenya's population is under 18 (that's 23.5 million).
More than half of those children (12 million) are experiencing poverty in multiple ways (food, resources, education, housing etc.).
Currently there are more than 3 million orphans in Kenya.
Another 3 million children are engaged in child labor in Kenya.
Violence against children is pervasive. Around one in two young women (46%) and young men (56%) experienced violence as a child.
Education in Kenya
2.5 million children aged 4-17 have never been to school.
Although there is “free” and “public” education, schools require uniforms and materials to be purchased by families before a student will be allowed to attend. This means families must pay for nutrition, books, all supplies, exams, and exam materials. If a family cannot purchase these items, the child cannot attend school.
Crowding is common (40–60+ students per class).
Teacher shortages and resource limits reduce quality.
Rural areas sometimes have limited school access.
Poverty & Violence
16 million Kenyans (30%) live on less than $2 a day.
Nearly 10 million do not have access to clean water.
